Welcoming Our New Class of Undergraduate Research Students

The Research4Babies team is delighted to welcome three University of Alberta undergraduate students who will be joining our laboratory through the BIOL 499 and PHYSL 468/469 research courses.

Each student will contribute to a project addressing an important question in neonatal or pediatric resuscitation research.

Prabhnoor Jagdav — BIOL 499

Prabhnoor will investigate VEGFA expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells as a potential biomarker of hypoxic stress during and after drowning in children.

Identifying biomarkers of hypoxic injury could improve our understanding of the physiological response to drowning and may ultimately help clinicians assess injury severity and recovery.

Jessica Gill — PHYSL 468/469

Jessica will examine different chest-compression techniques following drowning using our newly established piglet drowning model.

Her project will help evaluate how different approaches to cardiopulmonary resuscitation affect resuscitation physiology and may contribute to the development of more effective CPR strategies following pediatric drowning.

Pricilla Oladele — PHYSL 468/469

Pricilla will also use our newly established piglet drowning model to investigate surfactant administration following resuscitation after drowning in children.

Together, these projects will provide important information about resuscitation mechanics and physiological responses during CPR following drowning.

Undergraduate students bring curiosity, enthusiasm, and fresh perspectives to our research program. We look forward to supporting Prabhnoor, Jessica, and Pricilla as they develop their laboratory, analytical, and scientific communication skills.
