Neonatal Randomized Controlled Trials

Research4Babies.org is the public-facing platform of the Centre for the Studies of Asphyxia and Resuscitation (CSAR) at the University of Alberta. Together, Research4Babies and CSAR design, lead, coordinate, and participate as a clinical site in national and international neonatal clinical trials aimed at improving care for newborn infants.

Our mission is to generate high-quality, evidence-based neonatal research that directly informs clinical practice, education, and international guidelines. Our work focuses on the most critical moments in a newborn’s life — birth, resuscitation, and postnatal care — where timely, evidence-based interventions can have lifelong impact.

Areas of Neonatal Research and Clinical Trials

CSAR / Research4Babies conducts, leads, and participates in clinical trials involving newborn infants, including studies focused on:

  • Neonatal resuscitation in the delivery room

  • Umbilical cord management

  • Oxygen strategies at birth

  • Respiratory support and ventilation

  • Chest compression techniques

  • Vasopressors and cardiovascular support

  • Birth asphyxia and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE)

  • Therapeutic hypothermia

  • Congenital heart disease

  • Surfactant therapy

  • Doxapram

  • Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and physiologic monitoring

  • and many other areas of neonatal and perinatal medicine

These trials include preterm and critically ill newborns and are conducted in close collaboration with hospitals, clinicians, researchers, and families across Canada and internationally. Whether serving as a trial coordinating center or as an active recruiting site, CSAR is committed to rigorous study design, ethical conduct, and meaningful clinical impact.

If you or your site is interested in joining any of CSAR’s current neonatal clinical trials, or if you are leading a neonatal trial and would like CSAR to participate as a study site, please contact Dr. Schmölzer directly at schmolze@ualberta.ca

CSAR is excited to start recruitment for the following trials in the near future.
