Expanding Innovation Through Education and Artificial Intelligence

The future of neonatal research depends not only on scientific discovery but also on innovation in education and training. That is why we are especially excited to welcome Dr. Chenguang Xu to the Centre for the Studies of Asphyxia and Resuscitation (CSAR) and announce the launch of CSAR Shenzhen, where she will serve as the founding Lead Investigator.

Dr. Xu is an Associate Consultant in the NICU at The University of Hong Kong–Shenzhen Hospital, an Honorary Assistant Professor at The University of Hong Kong, and a supervisor for graduate students at Shenzhen University. Her research focuses on neonatal resuscitation, simulation-based education, and the innovative application of artificial intelligence to healthcare education.

Our collaboration has expanded remarkably over the past years through frequent visits between Shenzhen, Shanghai, and Edmonton. Last year, Dr. Xu joined CSAR in Edmonton as a Visiting Scientist, where we worked closely on projects exploring neonatal simulation, educational innovation, and artificial intelligence.

The results have been extraordinary. In 2026 alone, our collaborative teams have published four papers together, including studies on neonatal chest compressions, sustained inflation and airway epinephrine, large language models in neonatal simulation, and the performance of artificial intelligence in neonatal resuscitation assessments.

Dr. Xu has quickly emerged as an international leader in simulation-based neonatal education and AI-assisted learning. As Lead Investigator of CSAR Shenzhen, she will spearhead collaborative projects focused on educational research, implementation science, simulation, and emerging technologies while creating new opportunities for trainees and investigators across Asia and North America.

The establishment of CSAR Shenzhen represents another exciting step toward building a truly global network dedicated to improving the lives of newborn infants through collaborative research, innovation, and education.
