Building a New Chapter in International Neonatal Research

At the Centre for the Studies of Asphyxia and Resuscitation (CSAR), we believe that the biggest advances in newborn medicine happen when researchers from around the world work together. Today, we are thrilled to announce both the launch of CSAR Shanghai and to welcome Dr. Jiang-Qin Liu as its founding Lead Investigator.

Dr. Liu is the Director of the NICU at Shanghai First Maternity and Infant Hospital, Tongji University, where he has established himself as one of China's leading clinician-scientists in neonatal resuscitation, delivery room care, delayed cord clamping, simulation-based education, and the care of extremely preterm infants.

Our collaboration began a few years ago through a shared passion for improving neonatal resuscitation. Since then, it has flourished through reciprocal visits between Edmonton and Shanghai, scientific exchanges, and an increasing number of collaborative research projects. Over the past year, these collaborations have accelerated tremendously, with our teams publishing four collaborative papers in 2026 alone, spanning neonatal chest compressions, airway epinephrine, artificial intelligence, and neonatal simulation.

Dr. Liu has been instrumental in bringing together investigators across China while creating opportunities for collaborative research, trainee exchanges, and multi centre clinical studies. His leadership, vision, and enthusiasm make him the ideal person to establish CSAR Shanghai.

CSAR Shanghai will serve as an international hub for neonatal resuscitation research, simulation, implementation science, and multicentre clinical trials, connecting investigators across China with colleagues in Canada and around the world.

We are incredibly excited about what lies ahead and are honoured to welcome Jiang-Qin as a leader within the CSAR family.

Welcome to CSAR, Jiang-Qin!
