Leading the Trial
Dr. Georg Schmölzer Based at the University of Alberta, Dr. Schmölzer is responsible for overseeing every operational aspect of the trial and leads the coordinating site in Edmonton.
Building Future Leaders
Dr. Brenda Law A neonatologist and early-career trialist at the University of Alberta, Dr. Law plays a key role in trial operations while training to become an independent clinical trial leader.
Site Leaders Across Canada
Dr. Po-Yin Cheung Neonatologist and administrator at the University of Alberta, Dr. Cheung is helping to drive recruitment efforts locally.
Dr. Elizabeth Asztalos Senior trialist at Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto, Dr. Asztalos leads her site and oversees the neonatal follow-up program.
Dr. Pia Wintermark A clinician-scientist at McGill University with expertise in neonatal neurocritical care, Dr. Wintermark leads the trial at her site in Montreal.
Dr. Thuy Mai Luu Based at the University of Montreal, Dr. Luu is responsible for neonatal follow-up assessments.
Dr. Maryna Yaskina The trial’s biostatistician from the University of Alberta, Dr. Yaskina ensures robust and accurate data analysis.

Dr. Gerhard Pichler Neonatologist and mid-career trialist at the Medical University of Graz, Austria, Dr. Pichler leads the Austrian trial site.
Dr. Anne Solevåg Neonatologist at the University of Oslo, Norway, Dr. Solevåg directs the trial in Oslo.
Dr. Anup Katheria Mid-career trialist at Mary Sharp Hospital, San Diego, USA, Dr. Katheria leads his site and coordinates trial activities across the United States.
The Patient Voice
Betsy Pilon Representing Hope for HIE, Betsy is the parent of a child with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and a passionate advocate for improving newborn outcomes. She played an active role in co-designing the SURV1VE-2 trial to ensure it addresses the priorities of families.
Why This Matters
The steering committee’s combined expertise spans clinical care, trial methodology, patient advocacy, neurocritical care, and statistics, ensuring that the SURV1VE-2 Trial is scientifically sound, patient-centered, and globally relevant.
