Honoured to receive the King Charles III Coronation Medal for my contributions to lung health in Canada

I was nominated by The Canadian Lung Association, which nominated deserving recipients to receive the King Charles III Coronation Medal. This was done with input from The Canadian Lung Association partners across the country and the public.

From this list, a selection committee identified 39 trailblazers of respiratory research, compassionate and committed clinicians, tireless and determined advocates and inspiring and supportive educators who made the most distinguished and sustained contributions to the field.

It was awarded for me work to improve the respiratory outcomes and decreased neurological disabilities for the most premature infants by enhancing resuscitation techniques at birth, facilitating home oxygen monitoring and reducing the incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

King Charles III Coronation Meda

Created to commemorate His Majesty King Charles III’s Coronation on May 6, 2023, the King Charles III Coronation Medal honours 30,000 Canadians from all walks of life who made exceptional contributions to society.

This esteemed honour celebrates individuals who have made significant contributions across diverse fields from the local community to the global stage.

Eligible candidates had to meet the following national criteria: the recipient has made a significant contribution to Canada or to a particular province, territory, region or community of Canada; or has made an outstanding achievement abroad that brings credit to Canada. Nominated by various organizations, these recipients reflect the values that both His Majesty and Canadians hold dear, including a commitment to service, the environment and inclusivity.

It is the first Canadian commemorative medal to mark a coronation. The Office of the Secretary to the Governor General is responsible for administering the King Charles III Coronation Medal program.

Description of the medal

The Canadian Heraldic Authority designed the medal, which was approved by The King. The medal is manufactured by the Royal Canadian Mint.

The Coronation Medal is the first Canadian honour to feature the Canadian Royal Crown approved by His Majesty The King, as part of its design.

The front side of the medal (obverse) features a crowned image of His Majesty King Charles III wearing coronation robes. Around the effigy appears the text, “CHARLES III DEI GRATIA REX” (Charles III, by the Grace of God, the King) and “CANADA.”

The reverse of the medal portrays the Royal Cypher (the monogram surmounted by the Canadian Royal Crown), over the sunburst design of the Canadian Coronation emblem.

The date of the Coronation is inscribed on the left side of the medal. “VIVAT REX,” meaning “long live The King,” is inscribed on the right side. The medal is attached to a ribbon using an arrangement of dark blue, bright red and white, identical to the United Kingdom’s Coronation Medal ribbon.
