Reflections, gratitude, and lasting impressions
The educational tour through Pakistan was an intense, rewarding, and deeply meaningful experience. Over several days, I had the privilege of engaging with clinicians, nurses, educators, and leaders across multiple institutions in Karachi and Lahore, all united by a shared commitment to improving outcomes for newborn infants.
Education, exchange, and collaboration
The program focused on neonatal resuscitation and respiratory support across the continuum of care—from oxygen use at birth to non-invasive and invasive ventilation strategies. Through lectures, Grand Rounds, case-based discussions, facilitated Q&A sessions, and hands-on workshops, we explored:
Neonatal resuscitation practices
Oxygen strategies at birth
Nasal CPAP and high-flow nasal therapy
Invasive ventilation in the neonate
Current practices, challenges, and emerging trends
What stood out consistently was the depth of engagement, the quality of questions, and the openness to dialogue. These sessions were true exchanges of experience, evidence, and perspective.
Moments that mattered
Many sessions began in a uniquely meaningful way—with the national anthem followed by a prayer—setting a respectful and reflective tone that underscored the shared responsibility of caring for the most vulnerable patients. I was deeply touched by the warmth and generosity of my hosts, including thoughtful gifts offered as a sign of appreciation and friendship.
Beyond the academic program, the cultural experiences were equally memorable. Visiting Minar-e-Pakistan offered powerful insight into the country’s history and identity, highlighting the cultural and historical foundations that shape modern Pakistan. Time spent visiting historic mosques in Lahore provided moments of reflection and appreciation for the city’s rich architectural and spiritual heritage. And, of course, the food—rich, diverse, and unforgettable—was a highlight in itself, reflecting the warmth and generosity for which Pakistan is so well known.
Among the most striking experiences was witnessing the changing of the guards at the Wagah Border between Pakistan and India—a powerful and unforgettable spectacle.
Gratitude and thanks
I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all my local and international hosts for their exceptional hospitality, openness, and commitment to neonatal care and education. I am especially grateful to Fisher & Paykel Healthcare for the invitation, outstanding organization, and unwavering support throughout this educational tour. Their partnership made it possible to bring together clinicians from diverse settings for meaningful learning, discussion, and hands-on experience.
Looking back
This journey reinforced the importance of global collaboration in neonatal care. While resources, settings, and challenges may differ, the dedication to newborn health is universal. I leave Pakistan inspired by the people I met, grateful for the generosity I experienced, and optimistic about the continued partnerships and collaborations that will grow from this tour.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this educational journey such a success.
