Clinical rounds and teaching at Tongji University

It was a pleasure to return to the Department of Neonatology, Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital at Tongji University in Shanghai for another visit focused on clinical collaboration, education, and neonatal care.

Having visited last year, it has been exciting to see how this collaboration has continued to grow over the past 12 months. Since the initial visit, we have established monthly online clinical rounds, where teams from Canada and China regularly connect to discuss challenging and interesting neonatal cases.

These sessions have created an outstanding platform for:

  • International knowledge exchange

  • Collaborative learning

  • Discussion of complex neonatal cases

  • Sharing experiences across healthcare systems

🩺 Clinical rounds and teaching

During this visit, I joined the clinical team for:

  • NICU clinical rounds

  • Case-based discussions

  • Teaching sessions focused on the care of premature infants

The discussions covered a range of important neonatal topics, including:

  • Respiratory support for preterm infants

  • Delivery room stabilization

  • Oxygen strategies

  • Long-term outcomes of extreme prematurity

  • Complex neonatal intensive care management

The level of engagement and enthusiasm from the clinical teams, trainees, and faculty was exceptional.

šŸŒ Building global neonatal partnerships

International collaborations such as this are incredibly valuable for advancing neonatal care and research. By sharing experiences, protocols, and challenging cases, we can learn from one another and improve outcomes for newborns worldwide.

The ongoing monthly rounds between Edmonton and Shanghai highlight how virtual platforms can strengthen global neonatal education and foster long-term academic partnerships.

šŸ¤ Looking ahead

We are excited to continue this collaboration with the team at Tongji University and further expand opportunities for:

  • Joint education

  • Clinical discussion

  • Research collaboration

  • Trainee engagement

Thank you again to the Department of Neonatology and the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital at Tongji University for the warm welcome and continued partnership.

We look forward to many more rounds and discussions in the future.
